Spotlight: Student Da’Jon

"I had seen it on TV but didn't think it was real. When I saw Rorey lift her, I was like 'how's he doing that?!'" - Da'Jon, age 7

Recently, Neglia student Da'Jon got a huge surprise while watching dancer Rorey Fraser and pre-professional student Maggie Weatherdon rehearse the Arabian Dance for The Nutcracker.

Not only was Da'Jon amazed to witness the lift in person, he was excited to catch up with Rorey, whom he first met last July while attending BOYS DANCE TOO - a free summer workshop at Neglia, just for boys.

Rorey, a Neglia alumnus, scholarship recipient and now member of Ballet Hartford, was Da'Jon's mentor during the summer program. Da'Jon enjoyed the introduction to ballet so much, he now takes class twice a week.

"When we're done in class, I wish we could start all over again and keep practicing."

When Da'Jon wanted to practice more before school, his grandfather built him a ballet barre. And he painted it red.

"Somedays I'm cranky when I get to class. But by the end I always feel happy. "

Da'Jon is a third grader in the Buffalo Public Schools. When he's not at ballet, he's also active with another passion, speedskating.

Neglia Ballet is excited to have Da'Jon in our conservatory and see great things for his future both on and off stage. We hope he'll continue with ballet and someday inspire a future young dancer, just like Rorey did.

Here are Rorey and Maggie rehearsing the Arabian Dance under Sergio Neglia's instruction.

What a great Thursday today was! I am so lucky to be abble to work with such talented dancers that we train is like a dream , there respect abd work ethic is admirable. I am so happy to Rorey back with us, this 10th Aniversary will be a special one.🌈🌞🌈🌞

Check out the video below to see Da'Jon's amazement firsthand (and listen to the beautiful Arabian music by Tchaikovsky)

It is moments like this that remind us how important access to the arts is. This boy arrived at the studio on Saturday thinking that there was class. He wasn't going to be picked up for a while so I invited him to watch a rehearsal of the Arabian pas de deux . When he walked into the studio he recognized 20yr old Rorey Fraser ( former Neglia student) . Rorey had taught him his first class over the summer in our free boys workshop. He loved the classes and started formal training with us this fall on scholarship.Had we not offered the free classes over the summer he would have no idea of the love he has for ballet. Look at his sweet face in utter awe and filled with joy. We can't wait to see him become a beautiful dancer! #boysdancetoo #NegliaMoments #nutcrackerballet
